It’s dark and I’m alone, but not alone. -- That says it all.

Your unfolding in this poem is tangible, Margaret.

Thank you, Fotini. There was definitely a lot more to explore with songs/memories mashed together, but I’m really happy with what came out so far. It felt good to revisit it all.

Thank you so much, Kym. I’ve been wanting to write about the radio song for so long, since it’s remained such an important moment for me.

How beautiful is this? Thank you also for the shoutout! The fact that you captured so well the moment you feel driven out of your home is so powerfully written in your poem. As if by magic you connect these different events in your life. "I pray that a certain song will come on the radio" is the story of my life. I didn't even think of anyone else experiencing this let along putting it in a poem and in a line like this! Absolutely wonderful!

Thank you so much! Every time you issued a song challenge, I found myself remembering how many singular songs are important to me (sometimes the only song I know from an album or soundtrack). So thank you for the inspiration 💛.

You're welcome. It means a lot that you created this post and wrote about the experience you have with music and how it connects you to events in your life and memories. Very grateful to have been included in a little corner. I was not expecting this. Thank you!

SO GOOD. AiC was my absolute favorite for years and year. When I got to "Don't Follow" in your poem I was like...wait...no...THAT "Don't Follow"?? I guess Jarrod and I have something in common.

I used to love Alanis too...that was the CD I'd hide under my bed when my cool, older, macho cousin would come over.

"Angry pupa"...oh, the synchronicities. I just can't spoil it now; you'll have to see what I post Friday. 😁

But on to your poem itself. What an awesome idea, and awesome execution. Great poetry is so often about shining a light on that one, specific experience, and tying them to songs is just brilliant.

Thank you, Mike! 😊 It's a poem that's been buzzing around my head for a while now, and it was so satisfying to write. I cut out a ton of other songs that feel like they made me who I am, so I may return to this (loose) form at some point.

Our caterpillars (from the kit you guys did too) finally became butterflies, but that pupa stage is so hilarious. One of my sons told me they wiggle sometimes to scare off predators.

I only ever had a cassette tape of "Jar of Flies", and tend to only listen to the same songs over and over, so I'm not actually super familiar with AiC. But I'm bonded for life with "Don't Follow." It's so completely good.

Yep, my wife had kind of an uncanny-valley, weird, slightly scary experience when she was moving things around in their enclosure and one of the chrysalises started to wiggle. Can confirm, it's very strange indeed, especially because the physics of that means that the pupa must have some kind of internal pendulum in there that it can shake in order to get the whole thing moving by changing its center of mass without changing its external shape at all. SUPER strange and awesome.

Well, "Don't Follow" is pretty special within the AiC catalogue. I feel like it leans a little more yearning rather than the depressed/angry feelings that so much of their music explores. And that harmonica solo!!!

Ha! Yes, uncanny valley-ish for sure.
