My oldest daughter still hates hiking in some of the beautiful places we went that summer. They have too much association with fear and anxiety for her to be able to enjoy them anymore. It makes me so sad. Some of the best places for herons and osprey, and my bird-crazy girl won't go on hikes there because they feel like covid. To me those nature preserves and paths felt like such a gift, such freedom. I loved the impetus to get out and explore places we might not have gone otherwise, but the feeling was not universal.

I’m sorry some of those places are spoiled for her. I’m a little cloudy this evening, but I feel like I know a few places that various people in my family don’t like anymore because they “feel” like the pandemic (me included). It’s sad.

Those were some of strangest months/years of my life. I almost hate to be reminded of how dreadful it was to force ourselves away from the society of our fellow man.

I know…it’s weird, I keep coming back to it. But I suppose it’s not that realistic to expect myself to be “done” processing just because it’s been five years since it all started. Really early in the pandemic, I remember seeing some friends in the lane next to me in North Seattle. We both pulled over into a gas station parking lot and yelled from our respective cars about how we were all doing (coping). It was so completely strange—one of many strange things during that time.

We used to drive our little Kawasaki Mule to neighbor's houses and chat from 20 feet apart. Packing up this cabin for our move to Connecticut, Laurie found 12 different masks from the early days. I placed them all together and saved them for maybe one day a fun game with grandchildren. Even she wanted to through them out and she keeps everything.
